    Life on Inis Meain

Inis Meáin (Inishmaan)

This islands name mean “middle island”. As the name states it is positioned in-between Inis Mór and Inis Oírr. The local community consists of about 200 people making it the least populated of the three islands. It is about 4km by 2.4km (2,252 acres).

The ferry crossing is about 40 minutes from Doolin Pier (one way). Inis Meáin is the least visited of the islands and yet has much to offer. There are stunning sights to take in on Inis Meáin such as medieval forts, churches and the ever famous “Synges Chair”. The thatched cottage where John Millington Synge stayed has been authentically restored and is open to visitors.

There are over 300 flowering plants from places as far as The Artic and The Mediterranean region found on Inis Meáin. A wide variety of nesting birds and natural ecosystems are also to be found on this tranquil gem.
